Gain Staging for Modelers: How to Get a Pro Guitar Tone

If your modeler sounds harsh, fizzy or muddy, gain staging is usually the culprit. Here's how to set levels for a pro tone.

Start at the input

Set the input/instrument level so the meter peaks healthily without clipping. Too hot and everything sounds harsh; too low and it's thin.

Use less gain than you think

High-gain amps need less drive when modeled — excess gain turns into fizz. Dial back until the notes stay tight and defined.

Balance your output

Match preset volumes so switching patches doesn't jump in level, and set the master to unity for your interface or FRFR.
